Raman-induced spectral shifts in optical fibers: general theory based on the moment method

The Raman-induced spectral shift of ultrashort pulses, having its origin in the phenomenon of intrapulse Raman scattering occurring inside silica fibers, has been mostly studied in the context of optical solitons. We use the moment method to show that such a spectral shift occurs both in the normal and anomalous-dispersion regimes and depends not only on the pulse width but also on the frequenc...

Mechanical mapping with chemical specificity by confocal Brillouin and Raman microscopy.

We describe the first application of confocal Brillouin and Raman microscopy to ex vivo human epithelial tissue - Barrett's oesophagus. This non-invasive label-free approach provides high-resolution mechanical mapping with chemical specificity, opening the route to a new integrated method for multiple biomedical and bioengineering applications, and potentially in vivo real-time diagnostics.

Limitation in Brillouin Time-domain Analysis Due to Raman Scattering

In the past few years, Brillouin sensing using either spontaneous or stimulated Brillouin scattering has proven to be an efficient tool for the measurement of physical quantities such as temperature, strain, local birefringence or core dopant concentration along a fiber. The Brillouin effect is the non-linear process showing the lowest threshold; however an increase of the involved optical powe...

Analysis of Rayleigh-Brillouin spectral profiles and Brillouin shifts in nitrogen gas and air.

On the basis of experimental Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering data in gaseous nitrogen and air, simulations are performed to describe the observed frequency profiles in analytical form. The experimental data pertain to a λ = 366 nm scattering wavelength, a 90° scattering angle, pressures of 1 and 3 bar, and temperatures in the range 250 - 340 K. Two different models are used to represent the RB-pr...

Spectral moment matching in the maximum entropy spectral analysis method

The formula for the spectral moments is expanded in a series consisting of autocorrelation terms. By using the autocorrelation extrapolation inherent in the maximum entropy method (MEM) for spectral analysis, it is found that good estimates of the moments can be found from a very low order autoregressive model. The motivation for this investigation came from results obtained during spectral ana...
